How to start a security company

Private security is a huge industry in South Africa, and a tightly regulated one. You cannot legally offer security services until you and your business are registered with PSIRA. Here is what that involves.

PSIRA comes first

The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) regulates everyone who provides security services for reward. The business must be registered as a security service provider, and so must its directors and every security officer it deploys. Operating without registration is a criminal offence, and clients who knowingly use unregistered providers are at risk too.

Training and PSIRA grades

Security officers are trained at PSIRA-accredited training centres and registered at a grade (from E up to A), which sets the work they may do. Keep a record of every officer's registration and grade, and make sure it stays current.

Firearms

A security business that uses firearms needs firearm licences issued to the business under the Firearms Control Act, safe storage, and officers who are competent and authorised to carry. Many companies start with unarmed guarding, access control or patrols and add armed services later.

Wages, staff and compliance

The private security sector has its own minimum wages and conditions, set through a sector bargaining council. Price contracts so that you can pay them: undercutting by underpaying guards is the fastest way to lose your registration and your clients. Register for UIF, PAYE and COIDA, and get a COIDA letter of good standing.

Winning contracts

Typical first clients are complexes, schools, construction sites, events and small businesses. They will ask for your PSIRA certificate, tax compliance, COIDA letter and B-BBEE status. Get them all in one folder. A free verified BizBoost listing shows clients you are a checked business, and our client guide how to choose a security company teaches them to ask for PSIRA registration.

Common questions
