How to start a business with little or no money
Most businesses do not start with a loan. They start with a skill, one paying customer and the next one. If you want to start something but do not have capital, here is a realistic path that keeps your risk low while you prove the idea works.
Start with what you can already do
The cheapest business to start sells a skill you already have or a service people already pay for: cleaning, tutoring, hair, repairs, bookkeeping, baking, design, gardening, transport. You need customers more than you need equipment, and you can buy better equipment out of what you earn.
Test before you spend
Before you buy stock or print anything, find out if people will pay. Tell everyone you know what you offer, post it in your community groups, and try to get three paying customers. If nobody bites, change the offer or the price before you spend money, not after.
Keep your costs close to zero
- Work from home or on site before you rent anything.
- Use the phone you have: WhatsApp Business, a free Google Business Profile and a free BizBoost listing cost nothing.
- Borrow or hire equipment until the work justifies buying it.
- Ask customers for a deposit on bigger jobs so you never fund materials out of your own pocket.
Keep money separate from day one
Keep a simple record of every rand in and out, even in a notebook or a spreadsheet, and keep business money apart from personal money as soon as you can. It is how you will know if you are actually making a profit, and funders and banks will ask to see it later.
When to register
You can start trading as a sole proprietor without registering a company. Registering with CIPC costs little and makes you look and feel like a real business, and many customers, tenders and funders require it. Read sole proprietor or (Pty) Ltd, then how to register a business.
