Tenders, corporate clients, funders and CSD registration all want proof that your tax affairs are in order. SARS proves it with a tax compliance status PIN. Here is what it takes and how to fix things if your status is red.
What the TCS PIN is
A tax compliance status (TCS) PIN is a code from SARS that lets a third party, such as a client, a government department or a funder, check your tax compliance status online. It replaced the old paper tax clearance certificate. You choose who to give it to.
What "compliant" means
- You are registered for the taxes that apply to you (income tax, and VAT, PAYE or others where they apply).
- All your returns are submitted, including nil returns.
- You have no outstanding debt with SARS, or an approved payment arrangement for it.
- Your registration details are up to date.
How to get one
Request a PIN for good standing on SARS eFiling; SARS removed the separate tender option in 2023. The PIN letter shows an expiry date, but the status behind it is live: whoever checks sees your status at that moment, so a return you miss after sharing the PIN turns it red. A PIN being issued does not by itself mean you are compliant. You can view your own status at any time and see exactly which item is causing a problem.
If your status is non-compliant
Your status will show what is wrong: a missing return, unpaid debt or outdated details. Submit the missing returns, pay or arrange to pay the debt, and update your details. Talk to SARS early if you are struggling; payment arrangements exist. A registered tax practitioner can sort it out quickly.
